Heatstroke Prevention

Lakewood, CA, like so many West Coast cities, can experience sunny weather and high temperatures. Beautiful weather, but it can be dangerous for pets when temperatures are higher and excessive. At Lakewood Pet Vet, a veterinarian on our team can schedule an exam to answer any questions about things to do to keep pets safe.

What Causes Heatstroke and How to Prevent It

Many factors contribute to pets experiencing heatstroke. The good news is, in your home and daily activities with your pet, there are things you can do to help prevent heatstroke.

●          Before taking your pup out for a walk around the neighborhood or in the park, know what the temperature is. Pets can sustain only so much before their bodies begin to overheat.

●          Keep in mind your pet is wearing a fur coat. It may be necessary to trim his coat in order to make the heat more bearable.

●          High humidity is also a culprit that can result in heatstroke.

●          Do not take your dog for a walk when temperatures are high, as it might not take much to cause them to have a heatstroke.

●          If your pet stays outdoors, he or she should have access to places in the yard that provide shade.

●          Indoors, outdoors, and out and about, always make sure there is plenty of fresh water available. Without enough intake, your pet may become dehydrated, which could lead to heatstroke.

●          Like their human caregivers, pets must retain a normal body temperature and drink a lot of water. The lack of either one can be detrimental to your pet's health and his or her life.

Signs Your Pet Is Dehydrated or Suffering from Heatstroke

During the hot season, watch for clear signs, such as an obvious lack of energy, confusion, an increase in his or her heart rate, and disorientation.
